Microsoft likely has a problem with the Windows security updates from the August patch day. They appear to cause unwanted side effects in some games, and the developers are currently investigating.
Crashes and unexpected restarts
According to the Windows release health notes in the Message Center, Microsoft has received reports that some games no longer run as expected after installing the August updates. Titles named include "ARC Raiders," "Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls," and "The Finals," though the list isn't exhaustive. Affected games sometimes stop responding or close without further notice, and in some cases an error message reading "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" appears. Windows devices can also restart without warning.
Microsoft is asking affected users to report their experiences through the Feedback Hub app. The developers are still checking whether the cause actually lies with their own updates, but promise to share new findings publicly once available.
No workaround yet, uninstalling isn't a good idea
There's currently no temporary workaround for the cases observed so far. Simply uninstalling the updates to get the affected games running again isn't a good idea either, since they close security vulnerabilities in the operating system that are, in part, already being actively exploited. Microsoft usually resolves such problems fairly quickly, so an unscheduled follow-up update could fix the underlying cause soon, depending on the case.
If you urgently need to play the affected games, a dual-boot setup with Linux, for example, could serve as a temporary workaround. Through the Wine-based compatibility layer Proton, "ARC Raiders" and "The Finals" also run there, though reports suggest that doesn't work for "Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls."
