Renting a dedicated server: what matters in hardware, connectivity and location

Processor generation, NVMe, bandwidth, DDoS protection, location and provisioning: the checklist that lets you really compare offers.

In short

With a dedicated server you pay for the whole machine, so every detail counts: processor generation and clock speed, memory, NVMe drives, uplink bandwidth, DDoS protection without surcharge, location and provisioning time. Compare offers on these points, not on the monthly price alone.

Processor: generation beats core count

Many cheap dedicated servers run on hardware that is several generations old. Eight old cores lose against six current ones. Pay attention to the specific model designation. FameSystems dedicated servers run on AMD Ryzen 7000 series with high clock speed per core, ideal for game servers, databases and virtualisation with few but fast VMs.

The checklist at a glance

MemoryDDR5 for bandwidth, enough headroom for VMsDDR5 with Ryzen 7000

ConnectivityBandwidth and traffic policy2× 10 Gbit/s

Traffic and uplink

Read the small print on traffic. "Unlimited" with throttling above a limit is something different from a real 10 Gbit/s uplink. For game servers, voice servers and backups the data centre's connection to the major networks also counts. Frankfurt with DE-CIX is the best location in Germany for that.

Which configuration for which purpose

  • Game server network or community: high clock speed, 32 to 64 GB RAM, NVMe, Proxmox to separate services.
  • Agency or small hoster: lots of RAM for many VMs, two NVMe drives mirrored, daily backups to external storage.
  • Database or application with high single-core load: Ryzen with maximum clock speed, DDR5.
  • Entry with a small budget: a tested system from the outlet, available immediately.

Contract and price

Compare the price including setup, DDoS protection and traffic. An offer with a setup fee and DDoS surcharge quickly becomes more expensive in the first year than the higher monthly price. At FameSystems there is no setup fee, price stability for the term and the prepaid model without hidden costs.

If you do not want to wait: the outlet has tested, preconfigured dedicated servers with up to 50 percent discount, available immediately while stocks last.
