Web space or vServer for WordPress?

Ready-made hosting or your own server? Which variant is right for blogs, company sites and shops.

In short

For most WordPress sites web space is the right choice: ready set up, maintained and online in minutes. You only need a vServer if you want to install your own software, run several projects with root access or tune the server for performance yourself and take over the administration for it.

What web space is and what you get for it

Web space is a ready-made hosting environment: web server, PHP, database and storage are set up, system updates are handled by FameSystems. You upload or install WordPress, set up your domain and are online. Server administration, operating system security updates and monitoring are not your concern.

Domains and e-mail hosting from the same customer area go with it. If you want a graphical administration with calendar, backups and one-click installations, add Plesk.

What a vServer means for WordPress

On the vServer you get an empty Linux with root access. Web server, PHP, database, SSL certificates, firewall, updates and backups are set up by you and kept up to date by you. In return you decide on every component: Nginx instead of Apache, a specific PHP build, Redis as cache, several sites on one machine.

That is freedom, but also responsibility. A neglected WordPress installation on a neglected server is the most common entry point we see in support.

When web space is the right choice

  • Blogs, portfolios, club and company sites with normal visitor numbers.
  • WooCommerce shops with a manageable range.
  • Anyone who does not want to take care of server updates, firewall and backups.
  • Projects that need to go online quickly.

When you should go for the vServer

  • You need software that does not run on web space, such as your own services, Node.js applications or your own cache server.
  • You run many sites and want to manage them centrally with your own tools.
  • You want to tune performance down to the detail and know your way around Linux.
  • Your site has load peaks that justify your own dedicated environment.

The middle ground: Plesk on your own server

If you want root access but no command line, take a root server or vServer with Plesk. The panel handles web server configuration, PHP versions, databases, certificates and backups via a web interface. The licences are available directly with the server at FameSystems.

Our recommendation

Start with web space. If you hit limits after a while, you will know exactly which ones and can move to a vServer or a root server with Plesk in a targeted way. The opposite path, starting with too much server and then neglecting maintenance, costs more in the end.

Web space, domains, e-mail and Plesk run like all FameSystems products in the Maincubes FRA01 data centre in Frankfurt, GDPR-compliant and DDoS-protected.
