DKIM attaches a signature to every outgoing mail, which the recipient checks with the public key from your DNS. Your mail provider generates the key, you enter it as a TXT record under a selector. If the mail is changed en route, the check fails.

You do not have to fend off DDoS attacks yourself: every FameSystems root server sits behind Arbor mitigation of up to 1 Tbit/s. The steps above protect against what Arbor does not see: weak passwords, open services and missing updates.

The effort starts afterwards: you need a server that runs around the clock, have to open ports, comply with the TeamSpeak licence conditions, install updates and create backups. Technically partly, sensibly not. The root server is itself a virtual machine, nested virtualisation costs performance. Use a dedicated server for it.
